BAKER TO VEGAS – 3 ON 3 BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

The Baker to Vegas Team is hosting a 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament in order to raise funds to support those who will be participating in the 2019 Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay. There are three (3) ways to support:

1) Donate $75 to form a team;
2) Sponsor a team from your command for $75; or
3) Sponsor a member to participate for $25, or participate/play yourself.

Teams will be separated into two categories: under 40 and over 40 (Old School). This event is open to both current and former Detroit Police Department members and will be mixed (both males and females will be on the same teams). We are hoping for enough teams to name each team in honor of our runners. Note: there are (24) runners.

The tournament will be held on Saturday, Mach 9, 2019 at Detroit Edison Public School 1903 Wilkins St., Detroit MI 48207 from 1:00 pm-5:00 pm. Members who participate in this event will do so on their own time. Interested members, who wish to play in the tournament, should forward their names to dpdfit@detroitmi.gov and you will be placed on a team.

The deadline to register has been extended to Friday, March 1, 2019. To register please go to dpdfit@detroitmi.gov. Bragging rights are at stake!

Michigan Law Enforcement Memorial Monument {0}

We would like to personally thank everybody that came out and supported the DPLSA Mixer on Thursday, January 17, 2019. During the event we raised over $1500.00. The proceeds are going to be donated to the Michigan Law Enforcement Memorial Monument through our sponsorship to honor the over 237 members who were our friends and colleagues that gave the ultimate sacrifice from the Detroit Police Department. I truly thank you for your support.

You can still come down to the DPLSA Office and make a donation by way of cash or check to the Michigan Law Enforcement Memorial Monument. Our goal is to raise a minimum of $5000.00 for a complete sponsorship, please help us in obtain that goal in honor of our fallen members! We want to make a healthy contribution to ensure that the Michigan Law Enforcement Memorial Monument finished, we want to ensure that our heroes sacrifice is never forgotten, thank you!

Officers in need of assistance!

Sergeant Paul Glaza and Officer Bradley Clark are in need of your assistance! Both of these members of the law enforcement community have been suspended without pay pending the outcome of their legal action. They both are suffering severe hardships while they work to clear their names. Recently Officer Clark suffered a severe medical emergency that created additional hardship on him and his family! Please donate to the go fund me page and assist Paul and Bradley, thank you!

No donation is too small and all donations will be greatly appreciated!

Thin Blue Line Act {0}

NAPO priority legislation, the Thin Blue Line Act, was reintroduced as H.R. 99 by Congressman Vern Buchanan (R-FL) on January 3.  NAPO once again pledged our support for this important bill, which increases penalties on those who harm or target for harm public safety officers by making the murder or attempted murder of a local police officer, firefighter, or first responder an aggravating factor in death penalty determinations in federal court.  This would be applicable whether they were targeted or murdered on duty, because of the performance of their duty, or because of their status as a public official. The only requirement is that the homicide provide federal jurisdiction.

This bill is critical, as law enforcement officer assaults, injuries, and deaths have increased sharply in recent years. Every year, the number of officers killed by firearms has increased. 52 officers were shot and killed in the line of duty in 2018, a 13 percent increase over 2017. Establishing stricter penalties for those who harm or target for harm law enforcement officers will deter violent crime. Any persons contemplating harming an officer must know that they will face serious punishments. NAPO strongly believes that increased penalties make important differences in the attitudes of criminals toward public safety officers, and ensure protection for the community.

The Thin Blue Line Act passed the House last Congress and we look forward to working with Congressman Buchanan to pass it again this Congress.
